iCarly is an American teen sitcom that ran on Nickelodeon from September 8, 2007 until November 23, 2012. The series, created by Dan Schneider, focuses on teenager Carly Shay, who creates her own web show called iCarly with her best friends Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson. The show stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, Jennette McCurdy as Sam, Nathan Kress as Freddie, Jerry Trainor as Spencer, and Noah Munck as Gibby, and was taped at Nickelodeon on Sunset (season 1–5) and KTLA Studios (Season 6–7) in Hollywood, California. The show was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding Children's Program five times. The series finale, "iGoodbye", aired on November 23, 2012.
Why It Rocks
- Memorable characters (good or bad) like Carly, Sam, Freddie, Spencer, Gibby, T-Bo, Marissa Benson, Lewbert, Principal Franklin, Nevel Papperman, etc.
- Freddie, in particular, is debatably the most likeable and relatable of all the characters in the show.
- Memorable guest characters.
- A lot of famous people like Emma Stone, Jimmy Fallon, Michelle Obama, Jane Lynch, Jim Parsons, Jack Black and many more have guest starred on this show.
- Memorable hilarious moments, especially from Spencer, Gibby, and T-Bo.
- A handful of good contributions.
- Sometimes deals with serious topics, such as parents in the military and bad Christmas experiences.
- Some good morals for everyone, especially the fans. For example, the two-parter, "iStart A Fan War" was made to explain to fans that they focus too much on hypothetical relationships between the characters (aka shipping) and not on what iCarly is meant to do, which is provide comedic entertainment (even if this lesson does contradict itself which is explained how in BQ #5).
- In the beginning of "iTake On Dingo", the PlayStation controllers made a cameo appearance!
- Hyperactive and realistic acting that gives a sense of reality to the characters.
- It had a crossover with Victorious titled "iParty with Victorious". It even had a spin-off series, that wasn't very good, but at least we got to see Sam again.
- Emotional, yet heartwarming series finale, "iGoodbye".
Bad Qualities
- At times, it gets pretty mean-spirited, annoying, dumb, exaggerated, and cringy. It has also had some pretty poorly handled morals and over-usage of gross attempts at humor.
- Likewise, there are a handful of awful episodes like "iKiss", "iMeet Fred", "iDate a Bad Boy", “iSell Penny-Tees”, "iDate Sam & Freddie", and “iPear Store”.
- Freddie's mother is looked down upon and treated poorly simply because she cares.
- Some of the characters are pretty unlikable in their own ways (although most of them are supposed to be hated):
- Sam is most of the time just a stereotypical mean girl who likes to treat Freddie poorly and there are a few episodes in question where she is arguably at her worst. Despite this, there are a handful of fans who still root for her despite her flaws and the writers did develop her relationship with Freddie in a slightly more positive light much later on in the series.
- Carly Shay is pretty spoiled. She often gets angry when Spencer tries to act like a mature adult and threatens or bribes him into doing what she wants him too. (She is 15 years old and this is how she acts?)
- Freddie's mother, Marissa Benson, is extremely overbearing and overprotective.
- Lewbert Sline is the annoying, short-tempered, and loudmouth doorman (with a large wart on his face) of the building where Carly, Spencer, Freddie and his mother all live in. He’s supposed to be hated, though.
- Ms. Francine Briggs and Mr. Howard, the iCarly gang's school teachers, have overly strict demeanors and mistreat the students for no discernible reason.
- The later seasons started to focus more on romantic relationships than its original purpose: comedy.
Trivia
- The show will be returning at Paramount+ as a revival of the original series with Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress reprising their roles.
