Ripped Pants is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from Season 1, and the fifth episode in the series overall. In this episode, SpongeBob rips his pants, causing everyone to laugh.

Plot

When SpongeBob tries to impress Sandy Cheeks at Mussel Beach, he ends up ripping his pants.

Why It Shouldn't Mope Around and Shouldn't Curse

  1. It is hilarious and funny. It's a classic episode and is revered by many.
  2. It has a good ambiguous moral about when to stop a joke and how far you should take it. Jokes are funny but faking an accident for laughs is usually considered not okay.
  3. SpongeBob's song with the other outcasts is a great and memorable song.
  4. The animation is awesome and traditional.
  5. The scene of SpongeBob pretending to be a drowned victim can be seen as good expectation subversion.
  6. A good ending where SpongeBob and the outcasts were cheered by everyone after their song, and SpongeBob makes up with Sandy.

Bad Qualities

  1. SpongeBob joking about his ripped pants gets annoying for the viewers around the time the characters in the episode do get annoyed with him. It's especially annoying when SpongeBob pretends to be a drowned victim just for his "joke". Be careful with what you joke about, folks.
    • Also, it can be very inappropriate for kids.
  2. The credits misspell Paul Tibbitt's name and there are several animation errors.
  3. The moral is unclear to some viewers.
  4. Why did Frank the Whale have to appear as the actual biggest loser in the beach? Winding up with no one is more fun than getting buried in the sand and forgotten by everybody.
  5. While the "Ripped Pants" song is very good, it has some inaccurate lyrics. The first verse says "When big Larry came around just to put him down, SpongeBob turned into a clown", but this never happened and Larry was as friendly and nice to SpongeBob as always.

Trivia

  • According to The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash, Nathan Kress ranked this episode as his favorite.
  • This is the first episode where SpongeBob's house does not appear.
  • There is a toy produced by Fisher-Price based on this episode that consists of a SpongeBob whose pants can rip. The toy also features the song, performed by Tom Kenny instead of Peter Strauss. The verse: "When big Larry..." was cut out.
