Sidekick is a Canadian animated television comedy series created by Todd Kauffman (former co-director of Total Drama, and later co-creator of Grojband and Looped) and Joey So. The series ran from September 3, 2010 to September 14, 2013 on YTV. In the US it airs on Cartoon Network and in the UK it airs on CBBC. The series is based on the original shorts originally titled The Not-So-Superheroic Adventures of Sidekick aired as part of the 2005 TV series, Funpak.

Plot

The series is about an orphan boy named Eric Needles, with his best friend Trevor Troublemeyer and his two female friends, Vana Glama and Kitty Ko, who are training to become sidekicks at the Academy for Aspiring Sidekicks in the city of Splittsboro. While dealing with intense sidekick training, Eric must also contend with his strict guardian Maxum Brain, his grumpy teacher Professor Pamplemoose, the evil Master XOX and keeping the secret of the disappearance of his superhero mentor Maxum Man from the city.

Why It Rocks

  1. Amazingly smooth and lively animation.
  2. Nice voice acting, especially from actors like Miklos Perlus, Christian Potenza, Denise Oliver, and Stephanie Anne Mills.
  3. Clever and humorous dialogue.
  4. Action packed theme song.
  5. It actually knows when to punish its characters, like if they're being unlikable or annoying.
  6. Some good morals, like facing your fears in Sleepless in Splittsboro.
  7. Unique characters, especially the superheroes and villains.
  8. Neat music.
  9. Colorful and beautiful art-style.
  10. Some clever original jokes, such as the constant cartoon gags that seem to be inspired by Looney Tunes.
  11. Interesting plots for most of the episodes.
  12. Awesome looking title cards.
  13. The series finale, Graduation Daze, where Eric graduates Sidekick School could've been a perfect way to end the series but... (check the 5th bad quality).
  14. Kitty Ko's design is adorable (depending on your view).

Bad Qualities

  1. It can be a little mean spirited at times.
  2. Although good, the animation can be a little stiff at times in the 1st season.
  3. Some of the characters can be unlikeable, especially Vana Glama, Professor Pamplemoose, and (at-times) Trevor Troublemeyer.
  4. Some bad episodes, such as Everybody is Side-Fu FightingTTSW, Teacher's PetTTSW, Those Who Teach, Do, Pain, Screams, and Maximum Mobiles, Fart of Darkness, Gimme a Sign, Sidekicks Rule, and Mandy-o and Eric-et.
  5. Despite having a perfect way to end the series, "Graduation Daze" has a pretty downer ending: Eric accidentally uses his laser vision to burn all of the diplomas.
  6. Can overuse gross-out elements, particularly when it comes to Trevor.
  7. Some episodes may have bad endings like Gimme a Sign, Henchman for a Day, Teacher's Pet, Everybody is Side-Fu Fighting, and Graduation Daze.
  8. Neither Eric or anyone who knows Maxum Man ever tried to search for him at all in the show.

Trivia

  • This show is the second show made by Todd Kauffman to carry on the tradition of having a skull on one of the character's appearances. In this case, it's on Eric's shirt.

I think the finale should have been the team finding Maxim Man

I found the show's series finale to be a weak way to end the whole show.

Hey it's not the worst ending in the world though.

I dislike the show. It's unfunny, mean-spirited, it has awful animation in its 1st season, every episode serves as a Eric torture porn, it's unfunny, it has poor writing, and it has a bad series finale.

But there were some positives about this show like the title cards, some episodes like "Sleepless in Splitsboro", "The Bogey Man", and "Teenage Mummies in Love" being decent episodes, and the theme song.

I feel like this show ended on a cliffhanger since they never found Maxum Man
