Afro Samurai is an action anime series produced by Gonzo, It's based on Takashi Okazaki's doujinshi manga Afro Samurai, which was published on the Nou Nou Hau magazine. The show was made for western audiences, and was first premiered on Spike TV (now Paramount Network). A sequel movie named Afro Samurai: Resurrection was premiered in 2009 and a video game based on the show was also released for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Why It Rocks

  1. Very vivid and beautiful artwork and character designs that resemble Frank Miller's comic book Ronin.
  2. The animation is very excellent, and still looks good to this day.
  3. The episodes contain flashback scenes about Afro's past which is a nice way to know about him.
  4. Awesome soundtrack that mixes hip-hop/rap with traditional japanese music, smiliar to Samurai Champloo's soundtrack.
  5. Most characters in the show are likable, or at least decent, especially Afro, he is very skilled in swordfighting and has a great reason to kill Justice (the main antagonist).
  6. Very well-done voice acting with excellent cast choices, famous actors like Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman were involved in the voice acting.
  7. It has touching moments like death of Rokutaro and Afro's friends being slaughtered.
  8. Very brutal and well animated action scenes.
  9. The intro song by RZA was pretty catchy and fire.

Bad Qualities

  1. A couple of characters are forgettable
  2. The show was very short lived, it only had 5 episodes, but it could had more world building if the show had more episodes or a second season or a sequel show.
  3. If Ninja Ninja (the friend of afro) and the woman of the second episode have cellphones, why other characters not? this could have been explained if there were more episodes.
    • It wasn't explained how Kuma returned at the end of the final episode, but this was explained a bit in the video game Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma, which had a very poor reception.

Afro Samurai had a mostly positive reception from critics and audiences alike, it has a 7.35 on MyAnimeList[1] and a 7,6/10 on IMDB[2]

The Blu-Ray of the series charted #16 on VideoScan's Blu-Ray's charts[3].
