Plot

Andi Mack is turning 13 when her older sister Bex returns home. Andi works through her teenage life, with the help of her family and her friends Cyrus and Buffy, including coping with the revelation that Bex is actually her mother and that her mother Celia is actually her grandmother, and managing her crush on classmate Jonah Beck.

Why Tomorrow Starts Today!

  1. It was one of the best Live-Action Disney Channel sitcoms during the late 2010s.
  2. It has quite mature plotlines for a Disney show:
    1. In the first episode, it was revealed that Andi's sister is actually her mother, as she got pregnant as a teenager.
    2. In season 2, it was revealed that Cyrus Goodman is gay and he has a crush on Jonah Beck.
    3. Buffy's basketball teammate, TJ, has a learning disability and that is why he acts like a jerk.
  3. It is one of the only Disney Channel shows that doesn't have a laugh track.
  4. Great chemistry between the characters.
  5. It has a diverse cast of characters: Andi has a Chinese mother and a Caucasian father, her best friend Buffy is black, and her other friend Cyrus is Jewish.
  6. The child actors are impeccable actors despite their age, as they portray their characters with tons of emotion and realism.
  7. The theme song, "Tomorrow Starts Today" by Sabrina Carpenter is pretty catchy.
  8. It has a large cast of characters: Andi Mack, her best friend Buffy, and her other friend Cyrus and much more.
    • Andi is a creative and artistic person. She is curious and inquisitive and always trying to learn more. Andi is comfortable in her skin and sometimes overly trustworthy and naïve, although she's not afraid to confront people including her parents for lying to her.
    • Cyrus is incredibly kind and has an open mind, wanting to see the best in everyone and give them a chance, like with TJ. Cyrus is endlessly supportive and deeply selfless, sometimes to his own detriment as he often puts others' happiness before his own. He is funny, adorable, and has a tendency to be dramatic.
    • Buffy is strong, confident, and she is not afraid to speak up for herself. She supports her friends but at the same time offers them good advice when she thinks they're making a mistake. For example, she advised Andi against making a bracelet for Jonah. She is the only sporty member of The Good Hair Crew, excelling in track and basketball. She is also great at math.
    • Jonah is popular, athletic, and friendly. Jonah is passionate about frisbee and will defend its status as a real sport. He is fun and positive and easy-going, says silly things like "docious magocious," and loves to tease. He was very supportive when he found out Andi's secret and even confronted his girlfriend for not respecting Andi and Bex. Jonah is social and charming, winning people over easily with the flash of a dimple.
    • Bex is adventurous and loves to travel the world, party, and have fun. She is an independent and free-spirited person who believes in herself without letting anyone control her. She is kind and friendly towards Andi and her friends.
    • Celia is the wife of Ham Mack and the mother of Bex Mack. When her teenage daughter, Bex, gave birth to Andi, Celia raised Andi as her own daughter since Bex wasn't ready to settle down yet. She was disappointed by Bex for abandoning Andi. However, she loved Andi and developed a very strong connection with her as her mother.
    • Bowie has a very chill vibe as he does not overreact or get angry after finding out about Andi. He is adventurous, just like Bex. Bowie is unpredictable and wild. He loves to live in the moment. He believes in nature and lets the universe guide him. He loves to protect the environment and nature and prefers to use clean fuel alternatives that do not endanger the environment.
  9. Unlike other teen dramas that have aired on Nick and Disney, Andi Mack doesn't solely focus on love triangles and dating drama, but it also focuses on friendship and family bonds.
  10. Teaches great life lessons, especially when it comes to family and friends.
  11. Very well-written episodes.
  12. It had a Chinese New Year episode that was a very accurate portrayal of the holiday.
  13. Plenty of heartwarming moments, such as when Cyrus comes out to Buffy, and she tells him that he's no different despite his sexual orientation.
  14. It is the first Disney Channel show to have an LGBT protagonist: Cyrus Goodman. And the show accurately depicts it.
    • In addition, Joshua Rush (who played Cyrus) is openly LGBT himself in real life being bisexual, though he came out after the show ended.
  15. All of the characters are deep, flawed, and relatable and have their own personal struggles and arcs, such as Andi discovering that her sister is her mother, Cyrus coming out as gay, and Buffy dealing with a mom in the military.
  16. It has some funny jokes, such as the running gag line: "hey, who wants pizza?"
  17. Even mean characters like TJ and Amber are likable because they both have personal struggles: TJ has a learning disability and Amber's dad lost his job.
  18. Ended Disney's dark age (along with Raven's Home, and DuckTales (2017 TV series))
  19. Mack Chat, a series of segments where children discuss the events of the last episode, is very enjoyable and informative.
  20. It can be nostalgic to watch for older Disney Channel fans.
  21. The show gives a great impact on kids and teens.
  22. The series finale is very emotional and heartwarming and a great conclusion to the show.

Bad Qualities

  1. It can be boring occasionally.
  2. Season 2B tackles too many plot-lines at once, and even handles some of them poorly, including Buffy moving away, but then she moves back to Shadyside.
  3. Miranda, Morgan, and Kira are very unlikable.
  4. Despite being popular and successful it didn't get a fourth season which many fans we're disappointed.
    • The show did have a lot of potential of telling more story if Disney give them that chance.

Reception

Andi Mack has been a critical success, thanks to the show's groundbreaking storytelling and that it made "Disney Channel fun to watch again". Many fans and critics have agreed that Andi Mack saved Disney Channel from going completely downhill. The Show currently has 7.1/10 on IMDb
