Clarence is an American animated television series created by Skyler Page for Cartoon Network. The series revolves around a young boy named Clarence and his two best friends Jeff and Sumo. Page, a former storyboard artist for Adventure Time and revisionist for Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, developed the series at Cartoon Network Studios as part of their shorts development program in 2012.

Plot

Clarence is a spirited boy who sees the best in everything. His unique perspective on life transforms even a mundane situation into one that is interesting or fun. Epic dirt fights, awkward crushes and secret tree forts are all par for the course for the youngster, who shares his experiences with his family and friends. That group includes his best friends, scrappy Sumo and cautious Jeff, patient mom Mary, and her laid-back boyfriend, Chad. Clarence's adventures should be familiar to many people from their own childhoods, but he takes them to the limit.

Why It's The King Of The World

  1. Surprisingly decent animation.
  2. Likable characters that relate to different people's childhoods, such as adorably optimistic Clarence, intelligent Jeff and fun-loving and voice of reason Sumo.
  3. Amazing voice acting.
  4. Handles serious topics like divorce very well.
  5. Gives accurate representations of the joys of childhood.
  6. Decent and relatable humor.
  7. Because there's LGBTQ+ presentation where Jeff has two mothers (EJ Randell and Sue Randell), the show creator confirms it as LGBTQ+, which is a good sign because Cartoon Network support LGBTQ+
  8. Good chemistry between the characters. For example, Jeff and Sumo's conflicting relationship doesn't get in the way of friendship itself, mostly thanks to Clarence.
  9. The plot lines relate to the popular events of childhood, such as going to arcades and hanging out at restaurants.
  10. Many great supporting/minor characters (Mary, Chad, Belson (Depending on your view.), Ms. Baker, Mr. Reese etc...)
  11. Colorful and detailed background design.
  12. Lots of good/decent episodes
    1. "Dream Boat."
    2. "Capture the Flag."
    3. "Clarence Millions."
    4. "Clarence's Stormy Sleepover (Mini Series.)"
    5. "A Sumoful Mind."
    6. "Mystery Girl."
    7. "Money Broom Wizard."
    8. "Rock Show."
    9. "Sumo Goes West."
    10. "Tree of Life."
    11. "Lil' Buddy (Depending on Your View.)"
    12. "Fun Dungeon Face Off." (which is a good way to start off the show, depending on your view)
    13. "Lost in The Supermarket."
    14. "The Forgotten."
    15. "The Trade."
    16. "Chad and The Marathon."
    17. "Pilot Expansion."
    18. "Clarence Wendle and the Eye of Coogan."
    19. "Skater Sumo."
    20. "Cloris."
    21. "In Dreams."
    22. "Pretty Great Day With A Girl."
    23. "Goldfish Follies."
    24. "Anywhere But Sumo." (Which was a decent way to end the series)
  13. The parents in the show are really likable and are great role models.
  14. Good music, such as the theme song, "King of the World" and the credits song, "Good Habits (and Bad)"
    • The title card music for each episode is great as well, and the artwork is great to match.
  15. All the character designs in the show are very unique and diverse from each other.

Bad Qualities

  1. The characters can be annoying or either unlikeable sometimes.
    • Sandy, even though she only had one major role in Hairence, she treated everyone like bullcrap in one episode.
    • Clarence himself can also be annoying to the audience, especially when he sometimes try to make friends with Belson, but ended up ruined Belson's life. (Although he helped Belson made up with his brother.)
    • Ms. Shoop is an unlikeable character through out the series, As she treats some students like Clarence like absolute crap.
    • Belson can also be unlikeable as he can be really rude to Clarence like most of the time, One of his worst being Straight Illin.
  2. It had some bad episodes, like Straight Illin. It was so bad that it had to be banned from Cartoon Network. There are also several other bad or mediocre episodes, such as
    1. "Lil' Buddy,"
    2. "Average Jeff,"
    3. "Hurricane Dilliss."
    4. "Breehn Ho!"
    5. "Besides Manners"
    6. "The Big Petey Pizza Problem."
    7. "Animal Day."
    8. "Gilben's Different."
    9. "Dog King Clarence."
    10. "Jeff's Secret."
    11. "Patients."
    12. "The Break Up."
    13. "Hairence."
    14. "Lost Playground."
    15. "Dullance."
    16. "Honk."
    17. "Where the Wild Chads Are."
    18. "Jeff's New Toy."
      • The episode "Fun Dungeon Face Off" while a good episode, might not have been a good way to start the show.
  3. Some character designs look weird and a few look kind of ugly.
  4. Characters like Joshua are treated like absolute crap through out the entire series.
  5. Some gross out humor like the close up of Clarence crying in one episode or him bringing the large submarine sandwich to the hospital during his visit to Belson.
  6. The second half of Season 1 wasn't that good compared to the first half and the other seasons.
  7. Clarence's voice doesn't really fit the nature of his character, sporting an awkward Elmer Fudd speech impediment that sounds too deep for a kid (although this drops after season 1). Sumo's voice is pretty unfitting too, sporting a nasally Beavis-like voice.
  8. The Romanian dub was not well-received.
  9. Depending on your view, the title cards can be disgusting or disturbing to watch (not counting the animated title cards), such as Ren Faire, Dinner Party, and Pilot Expansion.

Trivia

  • Skyler Page was fired from Cartoon Network on July 3, 2014 for sexual harassment towards Adventure Time crew member Emily Partridge as a result of his severe bipolar disorder.
  • Eric Edelstein, voice actor of Chad (Clarence's father), was also the voice of Grizz on We Bare Bears.
