Seiji no hiro, Devilman, DEVILMAN!

Devilman:  Crybaby is an anime series written by Ichiro Okouchi, directed by the famous Masaaki Yuasa, musically composed by Kensuke Ushio, and produced by Eunyoung Choi, Science Saru, and Netflix.  It ran for 10 episodes, all of which dropped at once on January 5, 2018 on Netflix's streaming service.  It's based on an anime/manga of the same name from the 1970's by the legendary mangaka Go Nagai(The creator of Mazinger Z), and is actually a re-adaptation, as there was a short OVA created in the 1980's.

Plot

In the series, Akira Fudo is informed by his best friend, Ryo Asuka, that an ancient race of demons has returned to take back the world from humans. Believing that the only way to defeat the demons is to incorporate their powers, Ryo suggests to Akira that he unite with a demon. Succeeding in doing so, Akira transforms into Devilman, possessing the powers of a demon but retaining the soul of a human.

The series is more of a direct anime adaptation of its source material than previous works, covering the entire span of the manga. However, many alterations were made to the plot, such as a modern setting and different characterizations.

Why It Rocks

  1. Astonishing vivid and colorful animation.
  2. Excellent music, courtesy of Kensuke Ushio.
  3. Incredibly inventive art style, color design, and camera angels, the trademark style of Masaaki Yuasa.
  4. Good voice acting in both Japanese and English versions.
  5. Devilman: Crybaby possesses interesting themes of nhilism and hopelessness that you don't often see in anime, especially in this day and age.
  6. THE FINAL EPISODE!
  7. Being on Netflix, the creators of the show didn't have to hold back when it comes to sex and violence; if they did have to hold back, then it would have harmed the quality of the series tremendously.
  8. Brutal and epic action scenes.
  9. It increased the popularity of the Devilman franchise outside of Japan.

Bad Qualities

  1. The story might be too dark for some people, and others, at first glance, might even see it as being edgy just for the sake of being edgy.
  2. The story is a little bit too short and seems kind of rushed, albeit not to it's absolute detriment, for the themes it's trying to present.
  3. The character's personalities are different from the original manga.

Trivia:

  • Wamu and his street gang in the series are based on Masa Bokuto and his gang of delinquents.
  • Mikiko Kawamoto appeared in one scene where she is captured.
  • Several characters from the manga including Demon General Zann, the Ostrich gang, Dosu-Roku and his gang, and Professor Asuka don't appear in this.
  • This marks the very first time, in over four decades, that the character Ryo Asuka is featured in an official anime series. Prior to this, Ryo Asuka had almost exclusively appeared in OVAs until now.
  • This is Atsuko Tanaka's second time to be voicing Sirene, since she previously voiced her in the Playstation 1 adaptation of Devilman.
  • The 70's Devilman TV series is featured within the universe of Devilman Crybaby as an actual anime.
  • The original opening theme has also been redone with a new musical score.
  • Psycho Jenny's design is highly influenced by Yasushi Nirasawa's figure design, from the colour pallet, arm fins and breasts on her back. Similarly, is Ghelmer thought the similarities are not as strong.
  • Noteably, this is also one of the very rare occasions where Psycho Jenny and Zennon die on-screen.
  • The opening credits feature rorsarch markings of the demons Kaim, Sirene, Zennon, Miki Kuroda, Jinmen and Psycho Jenny.
  • Devilman Crybaby was voted Anime of the Year for the 2018 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
  • Devilman Crybaby is also the first, and so far only, adaptation to feature the original manga ending, where humanity is destroyed and Ryo Asuka mourns Akira Fudo's death.

The page gives this anime a fair and balanced criticism although some of its pointers are kind poor.

Well, ItMeansNothing, but you can't set up a show for candidate for deletion just because you don't like it.

I realized that Akira and Ryo have an eerie resemblance with Tommy and John from Pokemon: Twilight Wings
