Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (Spanish: D’artacán y los Tres Mosqueperros, Japanese: ワンワン三銃士) is a Spanish-Japanese animated series made by BRB Internacional and Nippon Animation that debuted in 1981. It is based on The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.

Plot

Dogtanian is a young swordsman who travels from Béarn to Paris in order to become a Muskehound. On his way, he meets Porthos, Athos and Aramis and befriends a girl named Juliette.

Why it Rocks

  1. The theme song is very memorable. “One for all and all for one, Muskehounds are always ready…”
  2. Very nice animation for the 1980’s.
  3. Dogtanian is a very likeable character.
  4. The concept of The Three Musketeers retold with dogs is very interesting.
  5. Pip is a very funny character.
  6. The moment where Dogtanian thinks of his love for Juliette is very beautiful.
  7. The battle scenes are fun to watch.
  8. The Muskehounds are enjoyable and are very supportive of Dogtanian.

Bad Qualities

  1. Pip can be seen as annoying in early episodes.
  2. The show’s sequel series, The Return of Dogtanian was received poorly.

Trivia

  • The show got a movie adaptation and was released in UK cinemas on June 25 2021.
  • BRB Internacional and Nippon Animation would later work together on Around the World with Willy Fog in 1983.
