Haunted Mask II is the eleventh and twelfth episode of season two of the 1990s kids horror show Goosebumps, and the thirtieth and thirty-first episode overall. Part one and part two premiered on October 29, 1996 on Fox as a one hour special.

Why These Episodes Are a Symbol of Love

  1. It picks up on where the second episode of the first two-parter left off. Carly Beth's learned to accept herself for who she is and haunted mask is also shown to have returned from where Carly Beth buried it and possessed the shop keeper of the store containing the haunted masks.
  2. The episode contains a high amount of stakes, similar to the first episode. But they're arguably even highly here due to a total of not one, but two people being possessed by the haunted masks, unlike the first episodes.
  3. Top-notch acting (as to be expected from a show like Goosebumps).
  4. The effects used for the haunted masks once they attach themselves to their victims' faces are phenomenal.
  5. Like most episodes of the Goosebumps TV series, it remains faithful to the book with scenes like Steve and Chuck playing with Carly-Beth's Plaster of Paris head, Steve and Chuck breaking into the party store and Steve stealing the old man mask being adapted.
  6. As noted in WTEAASOL#3, in addition to having top-notch acting, Kathryn Long and John White were the absolutely perfect choices for Carly-Beth (Long) and Steve (White) as they amazingly capture the style and personalities of the characters from the books.
  7. Tons of funny jokes such as Steve mimicking Chuck when the latter asks the former to take the old man mask off and a bunch of kids mistaking Steve for an old drunk.
  8. The scene in the second episode when Carly Beth jumps in the way of the haunted mask in order to save Steve from it was very brave and heroic of her, especially considering how it's the exact thing that causes the mask to come off.
  9. Good ending: By the end of the 2nd part, Steve ultimately redeems his behavior towards Carly Beth when he and Chuck decide to stop picking on her. Which is especially heartwarming when you consider how badly they treated her in the first episode. And how they've ultimately learned from their mistakes and decided to change themselves for the better.

Bad Qualities

  1. They're are quite a few differences from here and the book it's based on. For example, in the book, Steve steals the old man mask in hopes of scaring the first-graders he's coaching. In the episode, he wants to wear the mask because he wants one last chance to do something scary before he's too old to trick-or-treat.
  2. It doesn't really expand on anything from the first two-parter and mostly uses already existing plot points from it's predecessor.
  3. Unexplained plot-hole: Earlier in the episode, Carly-Beth mentions that if you put one of the Unloved Masks on three times, you won't be able to get it off even with a symbol of love. But when Steve put the mask on three times, he was still able to get the mask off even with a symbol of love (saving Carly-Beth).
  4. Although John White did a decent job playing him, George Kinamis doesn't reprise his role as Steve in this episode. Granted, this is sorta justified considering that Steve is twelve and Kinamis probably aged quite a bit since he first played Steve but this could probably upset people who prefer Kinamis' performance over White's.
  • Speaking of which, since White has dirty-blonde hair, Steve is a dirty-blonde in this episode unlike the books and the previous Haunted Mask episode. This may confuse people who are either new to the series or didn't watch the first Haunted Mask episode.

Reception

The Haunted Mask II Parts One and Two were very well-received by both critics and many fans alike. It is widely considered to be one of the best episodes in the series. Part One has a 7.6/10 rating on IMDB and Part Two has a 7.7/10 rating on IMDB, making them one of the highest rated episodes of the show. Nostalgia Critic/Channel Awesome described these episodes as his favorite Goosebumps episode.

Trivia

  • Posters of Courtney Love and Cable appear on the walls of Steve's bedroom.
  • "The" is omitted from this episode's title.
