Sailor Mouth is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two.

SpongeBob and Patrick learn a bad word from the dumpster behind the Krusty Krab and begin using it in public, much to Mr. Krabs's horror.

Why It 🐬 Rocks

  1. All the curse words are replaced with nautical sounds (including the dolphin sound) as censorship, that way the young viewers won't know what SpongeBob and Patrick are saying while making for a very funny recurrent gag.
  2. This is one of the rare episodes that tries to teach good morals.
  3. The scene where Mr. Krabs stubs his foot and yells out all 13 bad words is the funniest scene of the entire episode.
  4. The animation as usual is pretty smooth, just like the rest of the show.
  5. Moral: Watch your language in front of other people, especially when you're at work.
  6. A lot of really funny jokes and humor switched around in one episode to the next moment.
  7. The plot twist in the end is pretty funny.
  8. Tons of hilarious lines, such as:
    • "Squidward smells... GOOD!"
    • "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"
    • "I thought this was a restaurant, not a guttermouth convention!"
    • "Don't you mean there are only seven?"
    • "C'moon, Gary needs a new pair of shoes!"
    • My (honk) foot!
  9. This episode has led to one of the funniest SpongeBob edited videos of it, uncensoring every word to make it sound almost legit.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. SpongeBob, Patrick and Mr. Krabs are a bit hypocritical towards each other, calling them out for swearing but doing the same not long after.

In an interview with Tom Kenny, while recording the episode, the voice actors found it hard to say stuff like "Hey Patrick, how the _ are you", so they asked Nickelodeon if they could just cuss and they would just bleep it out, and they said yes. However, there have been recorded moments of the voice actors swearing, whether in interviews or adult movies, like in Jennifer's Body when Bill Fagerbakke, Patrick's voice actor said 'I'LL CUT OFF YOUR NUTSACK AND NAIL IT TO MY DOOR, LIKE ONE OF THOSE LION DOORKNOCKERS RICH FOLKS GOT! THAT WILL BE YOUR BALLS!!"

The episode received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, while various members of the SpongeBob SquarePants crew consider the episode to be one of their favorites, mainly due to the satirical nature of the episode. Unfortunately, the episode was not immune to negative reception, and was criticized by the Parents Television Council, who interpreted the episode as an example of promoting profanity towards children - even though the purpose of the episode was to deter profanity.
