Squid Girl, known in Japan as Shinryaku! Ika Musume (侵略!イカ娘, lit. Invade! Squid Girl) with the subtitle "The invader comes from the bottom of the sea!", is a Japanese manga series by Masahiro Anbe, which was serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion between July 2007 and February 2016. An anime television series adaptation by Diomedéa aired on TV Tokyo between October and December 2010, with a second season airing between September and December 2011. Three original video animation (OVA) episodes were released between 2012 and 2014.

A sky blue mermaid-like creature comes to invade (or in her own words, ink-vade) the surface world for revenge for how people treat the ocean. However, her plan backfires and ends up working at the local beach house.

Why It Rocks

  1. Very fluent and detailed animation.
  2. The art style looks nice and impressive and the sea-side scenery is simply breathtaking.
  3. Squid Girl herself is a breakout character that steals her own show.
  4. Both finales of season one and two really are heartwarming and goes in depth with their characters.
  5. Very unique episode plots.
  6. The show has a very likable and colorful cast of characters.
  7. Christine Marie Cabanos (voice of Madoka Kaname in Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Amitie from Puyo Puyo Tetis, Nepgear from Hyperdimension Neptunia and Lu from Lu Over The Wall) voices Squid Girl in both seasons and OVAs.
  8. Both seasons and OVAs has very catchy intro songs.
  9. Chizuru is a very hilarious and entertaining character.
  10. Very well done writing.
  11. Very catchy soundtrack.
  12. Squid Girl's squid talk is very fun to hear.
  13. Mini Squid Girl has a very cute design and is entertaining to watch.
  14. It was so popular that some items related to the anime appear in some video games, most notably Splatoon.

Bad Qualities

  1. The main plot can be weak at times.
  2. The show has its share of unlikable characters:
    • Eiko can be rude and selfish at times.
    • Sanae's obsession with Squid Girl can be pretty creepy, depending on your view.
    • Cindy and the three scientists are very annoying with their obsession over finding aliens and thinking Squid Girl is one.
  3. All of the dub voice actors changed in Season 2 (except for Christine Marie Cabanos), with most sounding either better or worse like Greg Ayres, Emily Neves and Luci Christian.
