"The Demon in the Mattress" is the first half of the fourth episode in the first season of Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Plot

Unable to sleep on her old lumpy mattress, Muriel orders a new one, but as soon as it arrives, it is revealed that it apparently harbors an evil spirit, which proceeds to possess her as she sleeps.

Why It Rocks

  1. The plot is very dark and creative, as it has Muriel ordering a new mattress when finding her old one very lumpy, but when testing a sleep on it, it possesses her into a demon!
  2. Speaking of which, Muriel and Eustace's demon forms look pretty cool and scary.
  3. Muriel getting mad at her old, lumpy mattress and ordering a new one at the start is very relatable.
  4. "It would be lovely if I could have a cup. Of. Tea!" - Muriel possessed as a demon, which was pretty funny, along with the thumb war Demon Muriel has with Courage and even Eustace trying to read the poem to get the demon out of Muriel's body.
  5. The way Courage gets the demon out of Muriel's body is pretty clever, as he gets Muriel's night dress from underground, searches on the talking computer and comes across a strange poem. Although Eustace's attempts at reading the poem in Muriel's dress backfired, at least when Courage done it did the demon get of Muriel's body, but then it went into Eustace when he wanted to redo the poem again.
  6. Good Ending: Although the demon goes into Eustace's body the minute it goes out of Muriel's, at least Courage bit Eustace and Muriel smacked him with a rolling pin as his comeuppance. Then, Muriel orders to take the possessed mattress back, and it ends with herself and Courage relaxing on the living room sofa.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. Eustace putting Courage and his bowl on the floor just for him to sit near the table was a bit mean-spirited.

Reception

  • It holds a rating of 9.1/10 on IMDB.

Trivia

  • The deliverymen and their wagon make a cameo appearance in season 2's "Courage in the Big Stinkin' City".
  • The episode is a parody of the 1973 film, The Exorcist.
  • Due to graphical content, some scenes may be censored in some countries.
