The Loud House (Seasons 1-4)
|
The Loud House is an American animated television sitcom series created by Chris Savino. It has aired on Nickelodeon since May 2, 2016.
Plot
Set in the fictional city of Royal Woods, Michigan, The Loud House centers on Lincoln Loud, a 12-year-old (formerly 11-year-old) boy with nine (formerly ten) sisters. His siblings are bossy eldest child Lori, ditzy yet beautiful Leni, aspiring rock star Luna, aspiring comedian Luan, athletic Lynn, gloomy goth Lucy, polar-opposite twins tomboy Lana and girly Lola, child prodigy Lisa, and baby Lily.
Why These Seasons Rock
- Incredibly witty humor, jokes, idioms, satires and slapsticks.
- Likable characters with unique personalities.
- Memorable characters, especially the Loud siblings themselves.
- Lily Loud, the baby sister, is adorable.
- Great animation with an interesting comic-esque cartoony style.
- The writing is pretty good.
- Great soundtrack with a catchy theme song and awesome and touching songs such as "That's What Christmas is All About" and "Lincoln Loud, The Best Dang Brother Anywhere Around" a song where the sisters showed their love and how much they care for their brother.
- Really Loud Music brings this up to eleven, and has Luna sing about her true passions.
- Tons of cultural references, including references from Peanuts.
- Awesome voice acting.
- In every title card, the "Skater Dudes" font is used, which looks very cool, as well as having comic book-styled panels.
- Some of Lincoln's sisters, including Lori, Leni and Luna, really love him for various best relationships and he has true preferences between them.
- Some endings have really funny moments.
- Good morals and lessons for kids, teenagers, and adults alike.
- Lincoln is still grateful for having a large family, which is a positive message for other large families.
- It uses the slice-of-life formula very well.
- Some good/memorable episodes such as The Christmas special.
- Lincoln's relationship with his sisters is relatable and accurate, even if they sometimes don't get along.
- The moments where Leni's clumsiness is shown are hilarious and memorable.
- It is the first-ever Nickelodeon show to feature same-sex, biracial parents. Also, Luna is bi and dates another girl, Sam, as of "Racing Hearts". Which is a good sign, showing Nickelodeon is accepting of gay rights.
- This, however, may be a bad quality to more conservative parents who would rather introduce their child to the concept of sexuality during puberty (i.e., when the actual sexual drive and orientation arises). This led to many episodes being banned overseas and the entire show being banned for "LGBT propaganda" in Kenya.
- All Loud siblings have really cute and charming character designs.
- Depending on your view, Lynn started to improve in season 3 and is a bit more likable in season 4 (except in the episode: On Thin Ice).
- The show got even better in the second half of Season 1 and especially Season 2, due to characters starting to get development and feeling more fleshed out. Most of the episodes and writing got better as well, despite having a few mediocre or bad episodes (thankfully, not as much as the first half of the first season).
- Speaking of that, the characters are getting some character development as the show progresses, especially the parents as we get to know more about them. This is especially true to Lori and Lola.
Bad Qualities
- The series has started to go downhill since seasons 4 and 5. While Season 4 is still decent, it has a handful of problems that weren't present in Seasons 1-3.
- There have started to be a few more bad episodes compared to Seasons 1-3. Also, Lincoln torture episodes have become more prominent with no sings of toning down.
- More plots have been recycled, as well as there being more predicable episodes.
- A few characters have gotten flanderized.
- Lincoln has become a bigger jerk and/or more of a punching bag compared to Season 3.
- Lynn has become even more unlikable, especially in "On Thin Ice", since she learned nothing from her mistakes.
- Leni has become even dumber in "Don't You Fore-Get About Me", though ironically, she started to become less dumb in this season. Unfortunately, she was flanderized to become more dumber in Season 5.
- Lucy has become very unlikable in "A Grave Mistake" and "Sand Hassles".
- Sometimes, even the entire Loud Family can be unlikable like in "Kings of the Con" and "House Flip".
- Even Season 1 can be considered a better season than Season 4. However, despite this season's flaws, it's still decent enough to be here.
- Sadly, the series severely started to decline in quality and jump the shark as of Season 5.
- It has its share loads of bad or mediocre episodes like "Get the Message" (depending on your view), "The Sweet Spot", "The Green House", "Making the Case", "On Thin Ice", "Two Boys and a Baby", "Heavy Meddle", "Sleuth or Consequences", "Save the Date", "One of the Boys", "Come Sale Away", "Brawl in the Family", "ARGGH! You For Real!", "Friendzy", "Ruthless People", "Kings of the Con","A Grave Mistake", "House Flip", "Don’t You Fore-Get About Me", "Deep Cuts", "Sand Hassles" "Friends in Dry Places", "Schooled!" (depending on your view), and most infamously, "No Such Luck".
- Some of the episodes involve Lincoln being put through hell (either for stupid reasons, or for no reason whatsoever), such as the infamous episode No Such Luck where Lincoln gets kicked out of his house and has to sleep in the cold, with him later being to wear a squirrel mascot costume to earn their trust back. After heavy fan backlash, the show's writers had to tone down the mean-spirited vibes in later episodes, though this is brought back in some cases in Season 4 and 5.
- Some episodes are predictable, such as "Predict Ability" (no pun intended).
- Some episodes, particularly in Season 3 and 4, have plots recycled from earlier episodes of Season 2 or Season 1, probably since the writers are running out of ideas after the firing of Chris Savino. For example, the plots of "Scales of Justice", "Game Boys" and "Sister Act" are similar to "Frog Wild", "Shell Shocked" and "Cover Girls" respectively. Often times, it's hit or miss.
- The first half of Season 1, while good, was a somewhat rough way to start the series as it had a few problems that weren't present in Seasons 2-3.
- Lori and Lola were a bit more unlikable due to them acting meaner to Lincoln. In addition, the characters were slightly more bland and not as fleshed out.
- It had a few more bad episodes compared to season 2 and 3, which barely had any bad episodes.
- This can be mostly be excused, as the show was only starting to begin.
- Some attempts at humor are hit-or-miss:
- Luan's jokes can be annoying to the easily annoyed.
- Some hit-or-miss running jokes.
- There are uses of the toilet and/or gross-out humor, like the running joke of Lily's stinky diapers. However, Lily's stinky diapers gag came to an end in "Schooled!" where she managed to get potty-trained.
- On that topic, Lily, while adorable, can be really gross sometimes, especially when she sneezes in Lincoln's shirt in "Potty Mouth".
- It does have a couple of inappropriate jokes. At the near end of the episode, "Come Sale Away", we see the Loud siblings do their "victory dance" by twerking, which is something that is not only cringing but extremely inappropriate (and incredibly disgusting and uncomfortable in terms of children doing it) for a family-friendly show.
- Aside from that, some of the other jokes are dated, repetitive, forced, or unreasonably mean-spirited.
- Lynn can be extremely unlikable due to how she was rather flanderized in the episode "On Thin Ice" and to her mean-spirited bullying tone towards other characters, especially Lincoln. In fact, she's given no permanent character development whatsoever. Furthermore, she was infamously the one who started Lincoln's bad luck jinx in the above mentioned "No Such Luck".
- The Loud parents were also a bit unlikable during the early seasons as they were little neglectful and irresponsible towards their children. Though in earlier seasons, they were not nearly as bad as Peter and Lois Griffin from Family Guy despite their flaws given.
- Some of the recurring and minor characters also can be or are unlikable.
- Speaking of the Loud Parents, they didn't show their faces until "11 Louds A Leapin", though they also didn't show their faces in some Season 2 episodes like "The Old and the Restless", "Making the Grade", and "Brawl in the Family", but it's at least forgivable since that was the intention they went back then.
Episodes With Their Own Pages
Reception
The Loud House garnered positive reception with many considering it the savior of Nickelodeon following it's dark age. Specific Praise came for its animation, voice acting, characterization, and the heartwarming themes of each episode. The series was also praised for it's positive representation of an interracial gay married couple. They are the first married gay couple to be featured in a Nicktoon. Laura Bradley of Vanity Fair stated that The Loud House "handles the topic [of same-sex marriage] in exactly the right way...this kind of casual representation in children's programming is a milestone."
Trivia
- The show was based on Chris Savino's own childhood, Peanuts and John Hughes 1980s films (especially Ferris Buller's Day Off).
- Chris Savino was fired in late 2017 after he was revealed to have sexually harassed numerous female Nickelodeon employees, with Kyle Marshall replacing him as the show's lead director, and story editor Mike Rubiner replacing him as the show’s executive producer and showrunner.
- Savino was the second Nickelodeon employee to be fired for sexual harassment after John Kricfalusi, the creator of The Ren & Stimpy Show, which, coincidentally, was the first Nicktoon that Savino worked on.
- Lincoln has been voiced by five different voice actors: Sean Ryan Fox voiced Lincoln in the pilot episode "Bathroom Break", Grant Palmer voiced Lincoln in the first season from "Left in the Dark" to "A Fair to Remember", Collin Dean voiced Lincoln from "One of the Boys" to "House of Lies", Tex Hammond (son of series regular Grey Griffin) from "Game Boys" to "Room and Hoard" and Asher Bishop from "Wheel and Deal" onward.
- Due to Clyde's same-sex parents and Luna's bisexuality, some of the episodes were never aired or were heavily censored in some countries, like Russia, South Korea and Turkey. The entire show was banned in Kenya for this reason. In the Arabic dubbed version of this show, One of Clyde's dads, Howard McBride, was changed to a woman, due to Islamic law.
- The Loud Pets are named after real persons. Charles was named after Peanuts' creator, Charles M. Schultz, Cliff was named after Cliff Sterrett, one of Chris Savino's influences and Geo was named after George "Geo" Herriman.
- Contrary to popular belief, Walt was not named after Walt Disney, but after Walt Kelly.
- Collin Dean, the second voice actor for Lincoln Loud, is best known for announcing promos for Cartoon Network’s sister channel, Boomerang from 2015 and beyond.
- Grey DeLisle Griffin and Lara Jill Miller started together in Wow Wow Wubbzy!
